Comments : Named after James "Doc" Caples who emigrated from Ohio in 1848 and passed through the area on his way to settle in Placerville and Sacramento. "Doc" Caples was a delegate to the 1849 convention which wrote the CA State Constitution under which California was admitted to the union in 1850. In 2008 Caples Lake was pretty much emptied, but thanks to a bunch of dedicated fisherman, a lot of the fish in the lake were saved and most of those were transplanted to Silver Lake and other lakes. The El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) will be restocking the lake with 31,200 pounds of trophy brown trout and trophy rainbow trout. They will be planting approximately 12,400 of those trophy trout, along with 9,000 pounds of catchable rainbows, or about 18,700 fish. By the Fall of 2009, they will be planting approximately 175,000 fingerlings and sub catchable rainbows, and 50,000 fingerling mackinaw will also be planted. They have a ten year plan to recover the trophy trout and mackinaw fishery at Caples Lake. It's going to be several years before the Mackinaw get to be trophy sized fish in this lake. The Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout fishery at Caples Lake is expected to recover rather quickly. Shore fisherman do well around the spillway on the sandy side out to about 100 yards out. This area always produces good numbers of fish. For bank fisherman the bait of choice is Chartreuse and Glitter power bait on a small gold treble hook below a sliding sinker so that the bait will float up a couple of feet above the bottom. Bank fisherman also do quite well casting Kastmasters and spinners while walking along the shore line. Boat fisherman typically do well trolling with a 75 foot setback behind the boat with the typical trolling setups with flashers and dodgers. Large Browns can be caught trolling with a medium sized stickbait. Trolling for Mackinaw can be very productive on this lake, thought the trophy fish will take a while to come back. Mackinaw trolling can be done by bouncing a lead ball off of the bottom, with a medium to large sized dodger in front of a stickbait such as a Cisco Kid Lure. Be careful with a boat on this lake, there are several boat eating rocks scatterred around the lake and they are not marked, so they will sneak up on you.
