American Lake
American Lake is located in Desolation Wilderness, in El Dorado County. It is situated just below the Lake Aloha Dam. This lake is a bit of a hike to get to, but it is well worth it once you arrive. The lake is filled with hungry back-country fish that will jump at the chance to chomp down on a fly. This is a great lake because there is very little pressure from fisherman. The Desolation Wilderness is a federally protected wilderness area that is 63,690 acres in size. It is located along the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains, southwest of Lake Tahoe. It is a very popular hiking and backpacking destination. It is a great place to hike into so that you can enjoy the pristine lakes, views, and lakes that are fished very little. It mostly consists of rocky terrain, and bare granite above the tree line. There are sparse areas of scattered western junipers and lodgepole pines, and areas of small patches of montaine chaparral species such as Pinemat Manzanita, Huckleberry Oak, and Mountain Pride Penstemon clinging to the bare rock. Scattered throughout the wilderness you will also find many wet meadows that have a very wide mixture of annual and perennial plant life. Aspen trees, willow trees, and a variety of wildflower species and grasses inhabit these wetland type areas. Some of the animals that you may encounter on your trip will include Mule Deer, Black Bear, Coyote, Porcupine, Bobcat, and Badger. There are also a handful of species that you may get a chance encounter with which include the Red Fox, Pine Marten, Fisher, and the Wolverine. This wilderness type of area is quite the ideal habitat for the Yellow-Bellied Marmot, Douglas Squirrel, and the Golden-Mantled Squirrel, and the Pika Rabbit Species. There is a small variety of birds that you may see or hear while you are on the move which may include the Golden Eagle, American Dipper, Scotty Grouse, and the Mountain Bluebird. Many people from far and wide travel to the Desolation Wilderness area due to the numerous lakes and streams that are scatterred throughout the wilderness area. There is not a lot of pressure put on these lakes and streams, so there are quite a few quality fish that people enjoy. There are Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, and the less common Golden Trout.
