Angora Lakes - Upper and Lower
Angora Lakes sit at an elevation of 7450 feet. Angora Lakes are great for swimming, sailing, going out in a canoe, and fishing. There are rock cliffs at this lake, so please be sure to explain to the kids that it's not safe to jump from the cliffs to land into the water. There are also cabins located at this lake. Angora Lakes are tucked neatly into a glacially carved bowl high above Lake Tahoe. There is a resort here, which is located at upper Angora Lake. You do have to hike one mile uphill to get to the Angora Lakes, but once you arrive at the lakes, you will see that the hike is well worth it. There's a large sandy beach with plenty of shallow water for the kids. The older kids can find rocks to jump off and even cliffs for those that are able, but we strongly recommend that you do not allow anyone to jump from the rocks and the cliffs because it is dangerous and they can easily get hurt. There is also a trail here that leads to Echo Peak, and it is the shortest trail to reach Echo Peak. The resort is on forest service property, but it is privately owned. During the summer months they have cabins you can pay to stay in, but there is very limited availability. They have rental rowboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards available. They have unusual and novel gift items and books for sale at the resort. They also have a small store where you can get delicious sandwiches, treats, ice cream, and delicious fresh squeezed lemonade. This is a really great place to take the family for a day at the beach. During the hottest months, it can be crowded. Because of the alpine nature of this lake, it can be much windier and cooler than at South Lake Tahoe. There is a $5 parking fee, and dogs must be on a leash at all times. Dogs are not allowed in the cabins around the lake, and they must be kept out of the water at all times. Camping is not allowed at the lake. The cabin rentals at the Angora Lake Resort are rented by the week only. The rates range from $1300 to $1550 per week, and they can be rented between mid-June through mid-September. The cabins hold 4-6 people, and they do not allow pets. There is no phone, TV, microwave, dishwasher, or internet service available in the cabins. There are Cabins that are also available on Angora Ridge Road from other private parties and companies, and some of them can be rented for a single night, but they are a litle expensive as they can range from $400 to over $700 per night. Directions- Take Lake Tahoe Blvd. through the 'Y' (do not follow hwy 50 or Hwy 89) and follow to Tahoe Mountain Road for about two miles. Turn right and continue down this road until you must turn. From this point on, the signs pointing you in the right direction are plentiful until you get to the last left turn. Even though the road is called Angora Ridge Road, the sign just says 1214 . Depending on the amount of snow in the area, the USFS access road 1214 is likely to be closed below the Angora Lakes Lookout through Memorial Day weekend most years. There is also a $5 parking fee.
